Since 2014 Tourism Ireland has had a unique partnership with HBO, capitalising on the huge global success of Game of Thrones and the fact that much of the show was filmed in Northern Ireland.
TV and film are recognised as strong influencers on travellers everywhere and the stellar popularity of Game of Thrones® has been a fantastic opportunity for Tourism Ireland to create award winning campaigns around the last 4 seasons of the serie (Season 4-7) and to promote Northern Ireland to a huge audience of potential visitors across Great Britain, the United States, Canada, Australia and European Markets.
The key objective of our campaigns was to position Northern Ireland as ‘Game of Thrones Territory’ in interesting and innovative ways that engage with our audience.

Karen van der Horst started with Tourism Ireland in 2007, as Press & Communication Executive, and is since 2012 Marketing Manager for the Netherlands and from 2017 responsible for both the Netherlands & Belgium market. Prior to Tourism Ireland, she worked in Marketing for the Amsterdam Toerisme & Convention Bureau, and as Area Manager UK & Ireland for EF Cultural Tours and Go Ahead Vacations in both Amsterdam and Switzerland. Karen studied Communications at the Reinwardt Academie in Amsterdam.
